New York, NY, 03.01.2023 PRESS RELEASE

The International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR Institute), a global non-profit organization that helps others manage conflict so that they might better pursue their purpose, is pleased to announce Professor Joan Stearns Johnsen is the recipient of the James P. Groton Award for Outstanding Leadership in Dispute Prevention for 2022.

The James P. Groton Award for Outstanding Leadership in Dispute Prevention recognizes a person or organization who has contributed significantly to the development and/or practice of dispute prevention. Professor Johnsen is the first recipient of this award, which was established after James P. Groton, an early pioneer in and advocate for dispute prevention, was recognized for his lifetime achievements in March 2022.

Professor Johnsen, FCIArb, CEDR Accredited, IMI Certified, is a neutral on the CPR Panel of Distinguished Neutrals. Joan is also the Director of the Institute for Dispute Resolution at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where she teaches international arbitration, arbitration, mediation, and negotiation. Professor Johnsen is very active within the Dispute Resolution community, especially with regard to the imperative of dispute prevention. Since the early 2000’s, Joan has been educating and advocating for wider use of negotiation and communication skills for managing relationships and avoiding disputes. She is a past Chair of the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution and focused her term on dispute prevention and other innovative uses of dispute resolution skills, including establishing a task force on prevention that explored successes, existing research, best practices, and opportunities for greater acceptance of prevention.

She continues this work as an active member of the CPR Institute’s Dispute Prevention Committee and Task Force. Along with Professor Andrea Schneider of Cardozo Law School and in collaboration with the CPR Institute, Johnsen developed a Relationship Facilitator-Dispute Prevention Training program for arbitrators and mediators.
Professor Johnsen is a prolific author and speaker on the variety of applications of dispute prevention tools nationally and internationally. She is a frequent organizer and panelist at conferences and meetings, including for the Union International des Avocats, the International Bar Association, and the CPR Institute.

Professor Johnsen has over thirty years’ experience resolving disputes as an arbitrator and mediator. She has a diverse commercial practice with particular expertise in financial matters including trading, banking, and mergers and acquisitions. She is Senior Vice Chair of the Mediation Committee of the International Bar Association, and an academic Board Member of the Miami International Arbitration Society.

“It is exciting for us to champion Joan’s works with this award. Promoting dispute prevention requires a cultural change, and Joan has been an early and often advocate for deploying dispute prevention mechanisms in parties’ relationships and of the use of third party neutrals, in particular,” said Allen Waxman, President & CEO of the CPR Institute.
“I so appreciate CPR for recognizing my work with this honor. It means so much to me to be a part of CPR’s dispute prevention efforts to change the status quo. Although many have theorized about dispute prevention, CPR has really galvanized this effort with its Dispute Prevention Pledge for Business Relationships, protocols, and now the new relationship management training,” said Joan. “It is a joy to be a part of this effort that recognizes that while conflict among individuals and businesses may be inevitable, disputes and litigation are not.”

The award presentation took place at the 2023 CPR Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 1, 2023.
